Aiming to empower London-based women, Ozgen’s One Day in Istanbul presented by Dunya is an innovative community project that brings together a mix of amateur and professional dancers from diverse backgrounds to take part in an Ottoman Turkish-inspired dance theatre show at the Cockpit Theatre on 2nd December 2012. Nicolah Raqs is one of our beautiful and talented cast members, and this is her story.
Tell us a bit about yourself…
Nicolah Raqs, a post graduate student in Primary Education and a qualified Therapist, became mesmerised by the mystery and elegance of Middle Eastern Dance during a trip to Cairo around 5 years ago. Since then, she has had a real passion for embracing in the exquisite art and culture of bellydance. By regularly attending workshops with Master Trainers, Nicolah takes pleasure in bringing her soulful Jamaican roots to this art form. Her performing credits include Kings Club Chelsea; UEL’s ‘Culturamas’ event; BBC’s Don’t Tell the Bride; RAKS hafla in Belgium; T-Mobile’s Big Dance; amongst other events and special occasions.
Why did you decide to join the One Day in Istanbul project?
When I heard about One Day in Istanbul from Ozgen, I instantly loved the sound of the theatre project, particularly as it helps to empower women to stand up and feel good about themselves from within. I also wanted to learn more about Turkish culture, customs and dance styling.
What has been the best part about participating in this project thus far?
So far, I have enjoyed learning the new choreographies and meeting the other dancers who also have a passion for this project. I have also liked how welcoming everyone has been considering I started a few weeks later than most of the other dancers.
Support Nicolah Raqs and the One Day in Istanbul team on 2nd December 2012. Doors to the theatre open at 7.30pm and the performance starts at 8pm.
