Aiming to empower London-based women, Ozgen’s One Day in Istanbul presented by Dunya is an innovative community project that brings together a mix of amateur and professional dancers from diverse backgrounds to take part in an Ottoman Turkish-inspired dance theatre show at the Cockpit Theatre on 2nd December 2012. Fatima is one of our beautiful and talented cast members, and this is her story.
Tell us a bit about yourself…
Having been belly dancing for around 5 years, and learning a variety of styles. I have taken part and performed to a variety of audiences from theatre productions to weddings and parties. More recently I have decided to take my skills to another level and have taken a Belly Dance Teacher training course. Currently a stay at home mum and enjoying the delights of daily dramas with two little girls. I feel belly dancing gives me a welcome opportunity to meet other women from all different backgrounds a chance to keep in touch with my feminity and to celebrate my curves! My career history is in HR and Payroll.
Why did you decide to join the One Day in Istanbul project?
Deciding to partake in One Day is Istanbul (London) is something that I wasn’t going to miss! Ozgen is a wonderful teacher and always makes his lessons enjoyable with his way of learning new moves or choreography. His style is unique and to have an opportunity where we are going to be part of his vision is something truly amazing!! I know that taking part in a theatre show in central london will give me a feeling of achievement, and confidence! I can’t wait!
What has been the best part about participating in this project thus far?
I’ve really enjoyed how the show is developing…each lesson we seem to see Ozgen’s artistic vision a little bit more. Rosy and Michelle are great too, approachable and fun. I love all the girls in the production, and getting to know them has been great! We always leave the class laughing!! I love rehearsals and Wednesdays seem to have a new purpose!
